This is one of those rare works of Art that really must be seen. You can take the message with a grain of salt if you want, but you've got to respect the mind that went into making all of this work...

Robert Ullman is an indie comic / pin up artist, who's released several small volume books containing pin ups.

Teeny Bikini #5 features 20 pages of safe-for-work pin ups, clad in various hockey jerseys. The paper cover is in color, the interior pages are Kinko's quality black and white. Some of the images are reproduced from pencil sketches, while others are inked. (like the example above)

Teeny Bikini #5 is obviously the fifth book in the Teeny Bikini series, and it shows. While the illustrations are not without their charm or quality, the idea seems played out or just cheap.

With so many options for pocket porno, including the earlier works in the Teeny Bikini series, it's hard to recommend this 4 x 2 inch book. Then again, this may be Ullman's point: perhaps he's just offering a taste, to lead you into his better work?

Martin Hsu is an animator and character designer, who was stuck in the hard to get noticed lower right corner of the exhibitor hall. I feel bad for everyone stuck at those tables, but I don't know a solution. (how do you fill a square room without putting people in the back or in the corners?)

Doodles O Noodles is a hard cover, 56 page, full color book that collects many of Martini's illustrations. Some of the work is graphic / vector based; some of the work is digitally colored pen & ink sketching; all of it is boldly colored, cartoony, and very fun.

To be clear, Doodles O Noodles is an art book and, while many of its pages may originate from the same animation, there is no story here. I wasn't bothered by this per-see, but I can imagine confusing this $25 hard-back for a children's book at first glance... and, in some ways, I wish that is what it really was.

In fairness, this just shows how well Hsu captures the joys of childhood.

Doodles O Noodles is definitely a worth while buy and would only be slightly more desirable if it came at a cheaper price point and a soft bound cover.

I got a copy of Molly Lawless' Infandum #3 at SPX last weekend. Infandum is printed in black and white on big pieces of xerox paper. Unlike many indie comics, Infandum's cover accurately represents the quality of the work inside.

Infandum's 8 single page stories rotate between slice of life tales and stories about baseball. While nothing defies expectations, the art and writing is consistently well done. There is a sweetness to the presentation and a pleasantly light sense of humor, but there is also sincerity and, perhaps, a cautionary tale or two.

I enjoyed Molly's work over all and would suggest it to anyone looking for a light read. (or have a craving for indie comics about baseball)
